Betty Irene Bennett, 93, died at home in Kansas City, KS on April 22, 2024. Betty was born at Atchison Hospital in Atchison, KS on February 28, 1931, the daughter of Lawrence and Mateel (Winzer) Wood, the third of seven children. Betty grew up on a farm in Doniphan County, KS, and attended elementary school at Independence Valley, a one-room schoolhouse. She met her husband, Milton V. Bennett, when she was 13, the same year her family moved to Atchison, KS, where they owned the Midway Café. Betty graduated from Atchison High School in 1949. She was married to Milton April 9, 1949. They would have celebrated their 75th anniversary this year. They moved to Kansas City, KS in 1954, where they bought their forever home, and Betty lived there the remainder of her life.

Betty had three surviving children: sons Jim (Emma) Bennett, Tonganoxie, KS and David (Janie) Bennett, Bendena, KS with grandsons Joshua and Jason Bennett, Wauconda, Illinois; and one daughter, Susan Bennett Orscheln, Bendena, KS.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Bennett; son, Randy Bennett; son-in-law, Greg Orscheln; brothers Lawrence Wood, Jr. and Charles Wood; and sisters Carolyn Kane, Marilyn Taylor, Mateel Loyd, and Jo Ann Dobson.

During Betty’s life, she worked at the Johnson County Water District, was an active member of Maple Hill Presbyterian Church, the Shawnee Tuesday morning group, and the Hilltop Spinners Square Dance Club. She enjoyed taking immaculate care of her home, camping with family, outings with friends, and loved attending events and reunions with her extended family throughout her life. Betty also enjoyed acrylic and marker painting. She will be missed and held forever in the hearts of those who loved her.

Inurnment will be held at a future date at Good Intent (Alderson) Cemetery, Atchison, KS.
