J. R. Simmons III, 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 26, 2025, entering his eternal home with the Lord. Born on May 25, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, he was the son of Jesse R. Simmons, Jr. and June E. Simmons (née Hanna).
J. R. was married nearly 49 years to Barbara Simmons of the home. He was the father of four daughters: JaNice Petersen (Mike), JaNette Kunels (Nick), JaNeene Simmons, and JaNessa Simmons (Gregg), and one stepson, Mike Ziegler (Lori). He was blessed with eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends who brought him endless joy.
A lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, J. R. was known for his quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and his ability to connect with anyone. He had a remarkable memory and a deep well of knowledge, especially in history, music, and sports. Music was one of his greatest joys, and he loved sharing it with others—whether through listening, singing along, or reminiscing about favorite songs and artists.
J. R. worked hard throughout his life to protect and help those in need, always striving to do the right thing. He loved to laugh and cherished good times and meaningful experiences with his family.
J. R. was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Private services will be held at a later date. His legacy lives on in the stories, laughter, and love he shared with so many.
