James Douglas Newell (JD) was born 1951 in Marshall, MO. He was raised in Shawnee, Kansas and graduated from Shawnee Mission North in 1969. He went to his heavenly home to be with his parents Mary Darlene Carlin and James Newell on March 8, 2024
JD is preceded in death by his brothers Mike and Larry Newell.
He is survived in death by his daughter Ashley Devin Curtis (David), and sons James David Newell (Sara), Travis Cody Newell, and Patrick Dillon Newell (Kendra). Brothers Chuck Newell, Robert Newell, Mark Carlin, and sisters Brenda Dixon, Margaret Hunter, Thelma Sybert , Vickie Sybert., and Velva Steinhurst. JD has six grandkids that he adored to no end.
JD was a “friend of Bill W” and was 30+ years sober and very proud of that. He made numerous friends in the AA program and was an active member until he was no longer able to attend because of the pandemic. JD spent countless hours helping people who were struggling with addiction and it became his passion.
He also played in the AA softball league, even when he could barely walk. He could pitch a helluva slow pitch ball.
JD loved the outdoors; fishing, hunting, and kids sports, among other things. Bowling was also a passion for him. He never missed one of his kids sporting events. Even coaching them frequently.
JD will be cremated and interred close to his mother and his beloved Aunt Connie. The old Hillbilly, as he was called, would do anything for you if he could. That was a lesson he taught to his children, help those who need a hand and don't ask for anything more than a thanks.
He was also a lover of his dogs, Rosie and Jackson, as well as dozens of other dogs he owned during his life.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a local AA group or other substance abuse treatment program.
Services are being planned and will be announced at a later date.
