Mike Backen, 48, tragically passed away very unexpectedly on Friday September 15 th , 2023 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.
Mike was born in Idaho in 1974 and grew up in the small town of Lothair, Montana with Steve and Linda Backen. He started school at a two-room school house in Galata, and graduated from Chester High School. He spent time living in other Montana towns and married Lisa Hunt in 1996. They spent some time living in Minneapolis before returning back to Montana. After their marriage ended in 1999 Mike moved to Portland, OR where he met his second wife Mandy in 2006 and got married in 2008. They
eventually moved to Montana to be closer to his family in 2012, and then moved to Kansas in 2017 to be closer to her family. The two parted ways in 2020 but remained close and had a good coparenting relationship for their 3 daughters.
Mike had a great love for adventure. His favorite thing to do was to go fast. He loved being on his dirt bike, his street bike, a 4 wheeler, a boat….you name it. He would say “if it has wheels, I can drive it”. He competed in Motocross and even was on ESPN. He was the biggest kid of them all. Imagine a room of adults sitting in chairs with kids playing on the floor. Mike would be on the floor with the kids.
He had a big heart and loved big. Mike could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. When traveling he enjoyed the sights along the way, often making road trips longer so we could stop and smell the roses. He had an immense love for historical buildings and the detail put into them.
There wasn’t a wrench he couldn’t turn. Mike spent his life working in maintenance for various production plants. He also loved making homes beautiful with his amazing tile and stone work.
He is survived by his children Alex (Zoe), Rachel (Josh), Zac, Penny, Annabelle, and Lily, as well as his parents Mike, Steve and Linda, brothers Joe (Jess) and Ross (Maggie), sisters Tammy (Tom) and
Stephanie (Tim), grandchildren Carlie, Rhylee, Kennady, and Elizabeth, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service area will be held on Friday, September 22nd, 2023.

A service will also be held on October 10th, 2023 at 11:00am at Our Saviors Lutheran in Chester, MT. Luncheon to follow.
All are welcome.
