Burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, Kansas.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, William P. Lenihan, his mother, Gertrude Elizabeth
(Betty)Lenihan (Kennedy), his sister, Donna Luna, and his brother, Patrick Lenihan. He is survived by his
loving wife, Janie of 52 years, his loved son, Jason, his sisters, Judy (Larry) Hare and Kathy Rooney, his
brother in-laws, Mike Thompson and Greg Thompson, his sister in-law, Linda (David)Vaughan, and his
many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Mike went to Bishop Miege High School and graduated from Rockhurst College with a B.A in Business
Management. He began his work career in management with Macy’s while attending college. He spent
most of his professional life as Vice President of Operations and Personnel with E R A. Due to his many
health issues, Mike was granted permanent disability in early 2009.
While working at Macy’s, Mike became friends with a coworker, Janie. They had their first date on
October 19, 1968, married on June 4, 1971, and had been inseparable since.
Mike was such a devoted husband and father. Family was everything to him. He led an active life and
touched so many people with his words, actions, and great sense of humor that people will never forget.
What a great Irishman!! Mike loved the Chiefs, cars of any kind, playing pool, and playing cards or
games.
One of Mike’s greatest joys was spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks with Janie and Jason, his family,
in-laws, and friends. He was happiest when he was teaching small children how to fish or anyone
wanting to learn how to drive a boat, or holding the arm of a new time skier as they lifted out of the
water for the first time.
Mike was always eager to help, whether it was helping someone negotiate a better purchase price for a
car or tips for how to dress, create a resume, or prepare for a job interview. Mike enjoyed lending a
hand.
Mike faced many health issues throughout his life, starting at the age of 7 wearing leg braces for 3 years.
He was told he couldn’t run or climb trees, but he was determined, no challenge was too great, and he
refused to give up. He was climbing trees and playing with the other children as if the braces didn’t
exist. He carried that positive attitude with a sense of humor throughout his entire life.
His family wants to thank all his friend and neighbors for all the support. A special heartfelt gratitude for
all the Doctors and Nurses at the University of Kansas Health System who made this journey with Mike
and Janie, especially his Oncologists and Palliative care team. They were truly a gift to them.
Many people will feel the void of Mike no longer being with us, but he will forever live in our hearts and
will always watch over us from Heaven.
