Nhia Neng Her was born on August 15, 1957, in Haav Naab Xees, Xieng Khouang province in Laos, to Blia Yao Her and Ntxawm Kong. After the passing of his mother in 1976, his father remarried Ying Vang, who became his stepmother. Nhia Neng has 7 brothers: Txawj Pov, Zoov Choj, Nchaiv Tuam, Zoov Tsawb, Xaab, and twobrothers who passed away very young; and 7 sisters: Mog, Cua, Ntsuab, Maiv Lig, Poua, Pang, and Vang.
In October 1979, Nhia Neng immigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Watertown, Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter, they relocated to Kansas City, Kansas. On September 16, 1980, he married Ka Kong, who became the love of his life. Their families brought them together, but it was their growing love and devotion for one another that kept them together.
Nhia Neng and Ka were blessed with eight children—six sons and two daughters. Their growing family briefly moved to Pontiac, Michigan, in 1986, where Nhia Neng attended school. During his time there, he faithfully attended and served at Pontiac Hmong Alliance Church alongside several of his brothers and cousins. In 1989, the family returned to Kansas City, Kansas.
In 1994, Nhia Neng began working as an assemblyman at Harlan. His employment with the company came to an end in 2011 due to organizational changes. This change allowed him to spend more time with his family and community doing what he enjoyed: praying for his family, fishing, hunting, gardening, spending time with his grandchildren, and faithfully serving God through New Life Fellowship Church.
On April 2, 2026, Nhia Neng was unexpectedly admitted to The University of Kansas Hospital, where he was diagnosed with brain cancer. On April 28, 2026, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Though his earthly journey came to an end, his faith remained steadfast.
Nhia Neng is survived by his beloved wife, Ka; their eight children, two son-in- laws, and five daughter-in-laws: Fue; Soua and Blong; Blong and Ntxawm; Ntsum Lig and Pho; Kang and Bao; Ku and Karen; Long and Paula; and Seng and Mai Hlee. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and one grand-son-in-law: Kyle, Skyler, Lily, Breea and Ricky, Jolie, Nigel, Maximus, Keyan, Cody, Nicholas, Shaila, Tyler, Lance, Octavius, Leo, Isaac, Emalia, and Alora; and two great-grandsons, Liam and Rayleigh.
Nhia Neng was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather. He was a kind and patient son, brother, uncle and friend to many. A faithful Christian, he found great joy in prayer, serving the Lord, and caring for those around him. He was aman of few words, yet his love was evident in his actions. Whether it was a bag of homegrown rice (mov nplej tshab), fresh vegetables from his garden, or a few crappie fish he had caught the day before, he always found a way to share his blessings with others. His generosity, gentle spirit, and warm smile touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
