July 2, 1940 – October 16, 2025
Reverend Evelyn Jean Winberry, a devoted servant of Christ and pillar of faith in our community, peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on October 16, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on July 2, 1940, in Kansas City, Missouri, she lived a life of unwavering devotion, grace, and quiet strength.
Evelyn was the beloved daughter of Auten Walker and Eva Christine (Young) McCurdy. Evelyn was saved in a tent revivial at the age of 10, baptized at age 12 at Fairmount Christian Church. She dedicated her life to serving the Lord. She was an active member of Rose of Sharon Pentecostal Church of God, where she most recently taught adult Sunday School, worked closely with the homeless ministry, and co authored Sunday School curriculum in the service of her Lord. Her Bible, worn from years of study and underlining, was her constant companion.
On April 14, 1962, Evelyn married Reverend Shelby D. Winberry, after a short but meaningful courtship. Together, they pastored small churches across the Midwest, raising their children: Kimberly (Donald) Myers of Independence, Mo, and Rev. Brian (Michelle) Winberry of Blue Springs, Mo. She was also cherished by ten grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and a host of spiritual children whose lives she touched through her powerful teaching and mentoring abilities.
Surviving Siblings: Robert (Doris) Walker of Polo, Mo and Charles Walker of Thailand. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Raymond J Walker (infant), Virgil D Walker, and Wilber D Walker.
Known for her quick wit, her faithful prayer life, and her habit of always turning to prayer in times of trial, Evelyn embodied the fruits of the Spirit. She volunteered for many things, including the prayer hotline, always reminding those in need, reminding them that "nothing touches my life except that God allows it and that for my good". In her final days, she waited patiently on the Lord to call her home and slipped peacefully away with most of her closest loves surrounding her.
A funeral service celebrating her homegoing will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Rose of Sharon Pentecostal Church of God, 9623 E 38th Terr, Kansas City, Mo 64133. The visitation will be from 4 pm to 4:45 pm.
The Funeral service will be from 4:45 to 6 pm.
Her amazing life's race is finished, her faith rewarded. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)
