Virgil Staponski, 75, passed away on March 23, 2025, in Kansas City, Kansas. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Virgil’s life was marked by unwavering conviction, leadership, and a deep commitment to faith and country.
Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Virgil’s early years were rooted in the values of discipline and excellence. He graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1967, where he distinguished himself both academically and athletically. As captain of the football team, his leadership and talent left a lasting impression on the school community. His contributions were later recognized and honored with induction into the Rockhurst High School Hall of Fame. When appointed to attend the United States Air Force Academy, Virgil continued his education and commitment to service, graduating with an engineering degree in 1971. There he rose to the top leadership position as Cadet Wing Commander during his senior year—a testament to his character and dedication. On the field, he led the nationally ranked football team as captain during their Sugar Bowl-bound season in 1970. That remarkable team was subsequently inducted into the Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, with Virgil proudly accepting the honor on behalf of his teammates.
A staunch Catholic and patriot, and disabled veteran, Virgil carried both the visible and invisible marks of service with dignity and strength. His faith and core beliefs remained a guiding force throughout his life. Virgil is survived by his beloved wife Kathryn; son Virgil II (Kelly); daughter Meghan (Ryan); grandson Virgil III; granddaughter Rowan; sisters Marcia and Michelle; and brother Rod.
His family was central to his life—he was a loving presence whose dry sense of humor brought joy to those around him. Those who knew Virgil will remember him as a one-of-a-kind individual—principled, courageous, and always willing to stand up for what he believed in. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with his professionalism, integrity and wit.
